I like to contribute what I can to the community with both time and money. I think it's important to do so, not only for social responsibility but also because it is a personally rewarding experience to help others. This can be either helping other people, or helping animals. In some cases orginazations help both. For me, that's pretty much like having my cake and eating it too. I like to work with local organizations because I think I can make a bigger difference there. Also the smaller organizations can often benefit from my talents whereas the larger organizations will already have their I.T. worked out (or at least think they do). The following are some of the organizations I like to contribute time and/or money to. --Dave Bauer

Komputers 4 R Kids http://www.komputers4rkids.com Recently I had a non-profit organization come out to remove some of our ewaste (old computers and monitors and printers -- Some working -- Some not). This is a good way for businesses to dispose of their ewaste while actually helping the community at the same time. They provided me with a receipt for these items which will be a tax deduction!
When I met them at a computer show, they mentioned that they organize ewaste fundraising events for churches and schools. If you are affiliated with a church or school they can hold a collection event to raise funds for your organization or you can participate in an ongoing fundraiser. Qualified organizations can accumulate points towards computers, computer classes or funds for your organization. These fundraisers require little to no effort on your part and it is very rewarding.
Their objective is to put computers in the homes of under privileged children and families. They provide training for them as well. They also provide computers for schools. Much of what we can no longer use and couldn't sell if we tried, can be used in this way. What can't be used is properly disposed of. They are a state licensed for ewaste disposal. |

Pet Orphans of Southern California http://www.petorphansfund.org For over thirty years, the mission of Pet Orphans of Southern California has remained consistent. They are a non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement of companion animal welfare. They are committed to decreasing the number of animals euthanized annually in city and county shelters by focusing our efforts in these five areas: Rescue - Saving dogs and cats in need and providing them with excellent care and shelter while they await adoption. Adoption - Matching homeless dogs and cats with suitable adoptive guardians. Medical - Providing information on low cost or free spay/neuter and vaccination clinics and financial assistance for severe medical need to support dogs and cats already in loving homes. Education - Teaching responsible humane pet ownership and dog bite prevention with free presentations and handout materials to all age groups at public and private schools, community service organizations, Boys & Girls Clubs, Women’s Clubs and many others. Training- with the number one reason for owner surrenders being attributed to behavioral problems, they have many programs geared towards behavioral modification to ensure forever placements. These services are carried out with a firm commitment to serve the best interests of the animals.
